THE HUDSON VALLEY WRITERS’ CENTER TO OFFER WRITING WORKSHOPS FOR ADULTS AND YOUTH AND A FREE READING AT PELHAM ART CENTER

From October 2009 to January 2010, workshops and a reading for adults and children will be offered by The Hudson Valley Writers’ Center (HVWC) at Pelham Art Center through a new collaboration between the organizations. The public may enroll in the fall and winter courses beginning mid-August by contacting HVWC and the reading is scheduled for December. Information on the new workshops is found on writerscenter.org and pelhamartcenter.org.
“Pelham Art Center is very excited to begin this new partnership with HVWC.  Both organizations have decades of experience offering dynamic, high impact public programs and classes to youth and adults and to beginning and established artists and writers. The public will benefit greatly from this new resource for area residents eager to improve and refine their writing skills,” said Lisa Robb, Pelham Art Center Director.
Fall 2009 offerings include two courses for adults, Memoir Writing Workshop with Susan Hodara (Mt. Kisco), and Introduction to Fiction Writing with David Surface (Brooklyn) and one class for youth, Creative Writing for Youth (11 – 14yrs) with Charlotte Walsh (White Plains).  “For over twenty years The Hudson Valley Writers’ Center (located in Sleepy Hollow) has advanced the art and craft of writing by providing high caliber writing workshops for professional and amateur writers.  Our writing instructors are talented, published poets, fiction and prose writers,” said Jerri Lynn Fields, Executive Director of The Hudson Valley Writers’ Center.
This collaboration falls directly in line with the mission and current goals of both partnering organizations.  “The current economic reality is a challenge to nonprofits and collaboration is more important than ever,” said Renato Rosaldo, HVWC Board Member and Co-Chair of its Program, Evaluation and Planning Committee, “and by partnering with the Pelham Art Center we achieve an organizational goal to expand our geographic and demographic reach.”  Andrea Bayer, Pelham Art Center Board Chair adds “The Board of the Pelham Art Center also sees this as a wonderful opportunity to expand the Center’s offerings to the community – mixing writing programs in with its extensive course schedule in the visual arts.  We are sure that the response from our visitors and members will be very positive.”
In addition to collaborating on writing classes, Pelham Art Center and The Hudson Valley Writers’ Center will offer a literary reading at Pelham Art Center on Sunday, December 6, as part of ArtsWestchester’s Free Arts Day. The reading will take place at 2:30pm during the 1:30 – 3:30pm opening reception for Pelham Art Center’s annual artisan exhibition and sale, Home Sweet Home. The event is free and open to the general public.
HVWC will register all students for the workshops and will waive the required registration fee for HVWC and Pelham Art Centers’ members. To register for a writing workshop contact HVWC at (914) 332-5953 or info@writerscenter.org and for more information on the Pelham Art Center phone 914-738-2525 ext 111 or visit pelhamartcenter.org.
