The Inquirer writes to the Executive Editor at the Journal News over streetlight article
Traci Bauer, Executive Editor
The Journal News
Dear Ms. Bauer:
I am the publisher and editor of Mount Vernon’s hometown newspaper, The Inquirer, and I recently read an appalling and inaccurate article entitled Ex-Mt. Vernon official’s 3.1M deal raises questions. The article has basically caused a firestorm throughout Mount Vernon and beyond, since the journalism can only be described as shameful.
Your writer systematically assails Terrence Horton, owner of Sentinel Technology Services International, Inc., as if he is a common criminal, with one inaccurate assertion after the other.
The article revolves around a streetlight contract Horton was awarded after placing a bid along with several other companies.
I have been following and writing about the matter for nearly two years, and if I suspected wrongdoing, I would have written about it.
The citizens of Mount Vernon have been apprised continually, not only in the media, but at public meetings as well, that they will not be paying for the streetlights. The energy savings that the LED streetlights will generate will pay for the note to Capital One Bank. Yet, your writer wrote: “The LED project will be costing taxpayers $3.16 million,” which is totally wrong.
I reached out to your writer and he claims he obtained all his information from public records. He may have obtained some information from public records, but the rest of the information I am sure he obtained from those who have a strong interest in derailing the contract so they themselves get can a shot at it.
As a concerned journalist, I responded to your newspaper’s shocking article with an article of my own – which accurately rebuts the contents of your damaging article.
As the publisher of a totally independent newspaper, my newspaper is read more than any other publication in Mount Vernon. Why? Because the paper acts as a ‘breath of fresh air’ for Mount Vernon and is trusted and respected – contrary to The Journal News.
I think that the people of Mt. Vernon need to put a stop to the Journal News acting as a reckless daily paper and assailing individuals at will based on groundless and incorrect facts. They have been victimized for too long with your bias, irresponsible and damaging reporting.
I am certain there will be other letters to your editorial staff over your damning article.
