Fundraiser for unified slate of six Mt. Vernon
candidates attracts over 100 supporters
The
unified political slate
of Maureen Walker, Tamika A. Coverdale, Yuhanna
Edwards, Karen Watts, Roberta Apuzzo and Diane
Munro, held a fundraising event on Friday,
August 28, at the luxurious Elegant Rose Hall in
the Bronx.
The buffet/dinner dance attracted over 100 supporters,
and included friends, family members and the
former mayor of Mount Vernon, Ernest D. Davis.
Also
in attendance was George Brown, Mount Vernon
City Clerk, who attended in support of
Councilman Yuhanna Edwards.
The attendees were treated to great food, outstanding
music and short opening speeches by each of the
candidates, with the exception of Diane Munro,
who was not present due to illness.
During their speeches, each candidate emphasized the
importance of the coming election, and how their
vast experience will be in the best interest of
every Mount Vernonite if elected.
Politics in Mount Vernon can only be described as
chaotic at the present time, since many
candidates running for office in the coming
September primary were bounced off the ballot
due to irregularities. Those removed from the
ballot have taken their plight to every single
court in New York State and have been
disappointed at every level. Consequently, an
unprecedented situation has developed in which
above stated candidates find themselves running
unopposed for the moment. The scenario may
change when the general election takes place
this coming November.
"The members of our slate all have a vast amount of
experience. We all have a history of strong
dedication to the City of Mount Vernon for a
number of years. There is no doubt that this
slate brings forward the type of representation
the citizens of Mount Vernon are seeking," said
Karen Watts.
"The people of Mount Vernon should vote for me because
I have been an integral part of the City of
Mount Vernon for the past 20 years. I am the
Executive Director of the largest soup kitchen
in Mount Vernon; I have been on the Planning
Board for the past five years and I have seen
and gotten the experience as to how we can grow
the city," said Roberta Apuzzo.
This year will not be remembered as a high point in
Mount Vernon history.
On record, Mount Vernon is a city noticeably
poorer, blacker and more needy than the rest of
the county. And adding to the city's woes has
been a year marked by unprecedented crime, all
involving young people. Crime has also impacted
the schools and shaken residents to their core,
causing a serious 'bright flight' within the
city.
The citizens of Mount Vernon are desperate for a
respite from the crime that has forced many to
flee to safer communities, and many are
desperately seeking new leadership.
The slate of
Maureen Walker, Tamika A. Coverdale, Yuhanna
Edwards, Karen Watts, Roberta Apuzzo and Diane
Munro are encouraging citizens to vote for them,
since they feel they have the experience
to end
the violence in Mount Vernon,
where it's
common for residents to have numerous friends or
relatives who have been maimed or killed. They
are all promising responsible leadership and
safer streets.
