Bronxville
SCOUT PROJECT A FAMILY AFFAIR FOR OTHER FAMILIES
When a Boy Scout decides to build his Eagle Scout project to support families in need, you may count on his own family getting involved.  That was the case for Bronxville scout Brad Davies, 16, of Troop 5, as he prepared a Breakfast Food Drive with several components in early May.  Enlisting his troop buddies and his parents, Dick Davies and Gayle Haller, Brad set up shop outside The Food Emporium in Bronxville soliciting donations of cold or instant cereals, pancake mix, syrup, powdered breakfast drinks and more.  Then, expanding the circle of ‘family,’ he enlisted Dawn Ravella, Director of Mission and Outreach at his congregation, The Reformed Church, and the project took off.

“I didn’t realize how much people want to help others,” Brad said.  “I was especially amazed at the reaction of shoppers when I asked them going in to buy something for the drive.  Almost everyone I asked to help came through very generously!”  Brad and Troop 5 then prepared a full hot breakfast for young parents and children participating in the Andrus Children’s Center’s TAPAS (Therapeutic And Parent Aide Services) program in Getty Square, Yonkers.  A dozen family members sat down with the scouts on Saturday, May 9 at an Andrus clinic in Yonkers.  While the parents ate and visited, their children painted flower pots filled with impatiens for Mother’s Day gifts.
And a week later, while Brad was in school, his mother drove the family SUV filled to the brim with donated food to the Andrus Community Services office on South Broadway in Yonkers.  Eager staff helped Ms. Haller unload the generous offerings, assuring her that Brad’s work was vital for the families in their care and would be greatly appreciated.  Said Kevin Cook, director of development at Andrus: “Here’s yet one more example of people determined to help others, especially in this tough economy.  Brad’s Eagle Scout project will earn him a badge, but more importantly, it will provide dozens of children with a strong breakfast and the gift of hope for weeks to come.”
