Mt.
Vernon's Westchester School of Beauty making a big
difference in the community
The
Westchester School of Beauty Culture, located at 6
Gramatan Avenue in Mount Vernon, has been providing
Mount Vernonites and others with a lifetime of
satisfying and rewarding career opportunities in the
beauty industry for decades.
Founded by Michael P. Salamone in 1960, the school is
presently a thriving family run operation, preparing
qualified applicants for successful careers in the ever
changing beauty industry. Their curriculum is designed
to fulfill all the course requirements necessary to
become licensed hairdressers. The training and expertise
available at the school is legendary, and many of the
beauty shop owners throughout Westchester and other
areas are graduates of the school.
"Our goal is to provide our students with the proper
training and expertise needed for them to begin their
careers, and to assist them in realizing their
potential," said Jessica Salmone, the school's Director
and one of the owners.
Beyond the basics, the exceptional program offered by
the school strives to make each student understand the
importance of personal appearance, attitude, manners and
approach to life, and to convert that awareness into
growth.
The Westchester School of Beauty Culture, located on
the second floor, occupies 7,500 square feet of floor
space in a relatively new facility stocked with modern
equipment.
Throughout the years, many students unable to pay the
tuition at the school have received assistance in
seeking financial aid. The school has been approved by
the U.S. Department of Education, Office of Student
Financial Assistance and various state agencies. In
addition, The Westchester School of Beauty Culture has
been approved by the New York State Bureau of Veterans
Education, for the payment of GI Bill educational
benefits to eligible Veterans, Reservists, Guardsmen,
and other eligible benefit recipients.
"I enrolled at the school because I live in Mount
Vernon and the school is conveniently located. I have
been treated really well while attending the school, and
when I graduate at the end of June or early July of this
year, I plan to work for Camelot Funeral Home in Mount
Vernon," said Sara Humphrey, a very satisfied student.
The diversity of their students reflects their
philosophy of providing a solid career education for
people of all ages, color, national origins and sexes.
"We all work together here in an effort to assist the
state in training economically disadvantaged
individuals. Upon the successful completion of our
program, the students will have the necessary skills to
obtain employment and become productive taxpaying
citizens," said one of the other family owners, Michael
J. Salamone.
