Many
attend grand opening of
"Early
Childhood Matters!
Learn and
Play Corner" at Mt. Vernon Library
Children's play is not aimless amusement. It is their
work. Through play children learn about themselves, each
other and the world in which they live. They explore,
experiment, ask questions and discover answers. They
grow physically, socially and intellectually. Toys are
their tools.
On Tuesday, April 15, many parents, accompanied by
their young children, attended the grand opening of
Early Childhood Matters! Learn & Play Corner in the
Mount Vernon Children's Library, created to further
support early childhood learning experiences through
play.
The well attended ceremony was led by Patrice D. Cuddy,
from Westchester Jewish Community Services, Inc.
Opening comments came from
Opal B.
Lindsay,
Director of the Mount Vernon Library, who also
participated in the symbolic ribbon cutting ceremony.
Mayor Clinton I. Young had been scheduled to attend the
ceremony as the guest speaker, but had to cancel at the
last minute due to a commitment in Washington, D.C. The
mayor made sure that one of his staff members attended
in his place.
The new Play Corner in the children's library is an
important addition, and provides the perfect
environment for young children. The area has been
thoughtfully designed and will provide safe, and
developmentally appropriate toys for Mount Vernon
children to enjoy. This cozy, family oriented space also
provides parents and caregivers the ideal environment to
play with children, talk with others, or simply relax
with a magazine while their children play safely and
learn at the same time.
Early
Childhood Matters! Learn & Play Corner
was made
possible thanks to the sponsorship of
Westchester
Jewish Community Services, Inc., who provided the funds
to make the
Play
Corner a reality. In addition, an ongoing public
awareness campaign sponsored by
Westchester
Jewish Community Services' Parent-Child Home Program,
Early Childhood Matters! has focused on mobilizing the
community through education and team building. The
initiative is designed to support a literacy based early
childhood culture in Mount Vernon that promotes early
learning and future success.
