Star-studded fundraiser for
Nichelle Johnson packs AC-BAW in Mount Vernon
A star-studded fundraiser was held for Nichelle
Johnson, a candidate for Mount Vernon City Court
Judge,
Saturday night, July 11, at the AC-BAC Art
Center in downtown Mount Vernon.
Johnson's
many supporters were treated to an incredible
night of entertainment, featuring
famous
Latino comedian, Davian Velez, Kenny
Muhammad, aka “The Human Orchestra,” the popular
band known as "The Untouchables" and Kiss
FM's TALENT.
In addition to the incredible list of performers,
the attendees were treated to a great assortment
of food and refreshments.
Acting as the MC and DJ was Johnson's husband, Brother
Arthur Muhammad, who kept the
large crowd relaxed and laughing with his many
witty comments and jokes,
adding an element of fun and humor throughout
the evening.
Brother Arthur, a Nation of Islam Minister, who
is strict in his ways on a day-to-day basis, and
a community activist, surprised the guests with
his relaxed and down-to-earth behavior as the MC
and DJ - a side of him that impressed many.
Johnson, preparing for the September 15 Democratic
Primary in Mount Vernon, is facing tough
competition in her effort to become the next
City of Mount Vernon Court Judge. Her opposing
candidates include Helen Blackwell and
Tamika A.
Coverdale, Esq.
Johnson, a native of the Bronx, currently works for the
Mount Vernon Corporation Counsel's office, where
she started in July of
2000.
Johnson attended C.W. Post College in Greenvale, Long
Island and graduated with a bachelor's degree in
Business Management in 1988, and soon after
began working for the Federal Reserve Bank of
New York as an Analyst.
In 1990, Johnson was admitted to Brooklyn Law School,
and attended nights while continuing her career
at the Federal Reserve Bank, where she was
awarded three President's Awards for outstanding
service.
In Law School, Johnson competed and became a member of
the Moot Court Honor Society and went on to
represent Brooklyn Law in a National Trial
Competition. In 1993, she was honored by the New
York State Bar Association, Trial Lawyers
Section, for being on one of the two winning
teams to advance to the National finals,
representing the Northeast Regional Law Schools
in San Antonio Texas. She graduated from
Brooklyn Law School in 1994 with awards for
outstanding trial skills and was admitted to
practice law in 1995.
