Mayor Thomas to Declare a State of Emergency & Update on Unprecedented Public/Private Collaboration for Winter Storm
Today, following an emergency snowstorm meeting Mayor Thomas and key members of his administration; including the Mount Vernon School Board and Montefiore laid forth the steps taken to combat the first snowstorm of the year.
In collaboration with Volunteer NY, Durante Rentals, the Girl Scouts of America, United Way 211 and other organizations the City of Mount Vernon was able to seek out equipment for snow removal and volunteers to help.
Also, a social media campaign was launched across all platform called #MVReady which allows for residents across the city to follow the Snowstorm in real-time and add their input on road conditions and other issues.
For the FIRST time the Mount Vernon School District has agreed to partner with the City of Mount Vernon to clean the streets in unison. Together, they will help clear major roads and side streets.
We STRONGLY advise the residents of Mount Vernon to do the following to ensure efficiency:
- Calling 211 for Non-life threatening complaints and 911 for emergency services.
- Parking as close to the curb as possible to allow snow plows a space to clear the streets.
- Clearing your sidewalks within ten hours of LAST snowfall; Summonses will be given if they are not.
- Removing your car from school parking lots before nightfall on Sunday; Cars that remain overnight will be towed.
This cooperation is unparalleled for the City of Mount Vernon and going forward look towards this type of collaboration to take shape as we rely on our shared services to make Mount Vernon a better place.
