Janice Duarte Launches Campaign for City Council of Mount Vernon, NY
Janice Duarte recently launched her campaign for City Council of Mount Vernon, NY in the 2015 General Election, on November 3rd. As a lifetime resident, Janice is passionate about Mount Vernon and is running as a Democrat on the Independence Party Line in order to offer Mount Vernon residents true change from the status quo and new vision for improving the City.
Janice’s Mt. Vernon roots span three generations when her grandparents immigrated from Portugal over 50 years ago. Her mom graduated from Mount Vernon High School and her grandmother, parents and brother still live in Mount Vernon. In fact, Janice’s election to City Council would be historic as Janice would be the first elected official of Portuguese descent in Westchester County.
“I am encouraged by the outpouring of support from Mount Vernon residents throughout the City who are excited that my election to the City Council would be an historic event in Westchester County,” said Janice Duarte in an interview with Portuguese-American newspaper, Luso-Americano.
Mount Vernon residents face several challenges, from crumbling infrastructure to spiralling taxes. Residents need to S.E.E. their future in Safety, Education and Employment. As the legislative branch, the City Council is at the heart of these key quality of life issues. It’s time for new City Council members to bring focus to these key issues.
Mount Vernon is at an important junction of change and Janice believes that the City Council can take immediate action to affect change for the better such as (1) fiscal responsibility that incentivizes growth and savings to reinvest in the community, (2) increase home ownership by offering repossessed properties to first time homeowners that will occupy and care for them, and, most importantly (3) promote an open dialogue with residents, to ask them to share their ideas for what they need and want to see in their neighborhoods.
As the first in her family to go to college, Janice graduated from Barnard College of Columbia University. She is also an accomplished professional with over 15 years of experience and has dedicated the past six years of her career working with small businesses in Mount Vernon by managing their operations and growth. Previously, she was Vice President of Communications when she worked in Manhattan and intends to bring her management and communication skills to serve her hometown city.
“Mount Vernon has been great to me and my family. I am an example of what the American Dream can be, but I am concerned about the future of the American Dream in Mount Vernon,” said Janice in her interview with Luso Americano. “My community needs me and I want to serve in order to give back and ensure that the American Dream is available for everyone to live it in Mount Vernon.”
“Mount Vernon has many challenges… but this is an exciting time in our history and I hope to have the opportunity as councilwoman to drive positive change and a new future for Mount Vernon.”
