Mt. Vernon, NY
Indoor water park being considered by Mt. Vernon

The Mount Vernon City Council, accompanied by Mayor Clinton I Young, held a special meeting Wednesday night, September 15, in order to view a presentation on a proposed large indoor water park for Mount Vernon. Conceived as the “largest indoor water park in the Northeast,” preliminary project concepts and plans for “Fun City – Mount Vernon” were unveiled during the presentation in the City Council Chambers.

At this time, “Fun City – Mount Vernon” is the current working title for the proposed multi-purpose, state-of-the-art recreational, educational and fitness center.

Proposed for the site where the locally popular “Ice Hutch” skating rink is now located, this 410,000 sq. ft. facility will be conveniently accessible from the Hutchinson Parkway and cover approximately 12 acres of underutilized property.

“Mount Vernon is a progressive community undergoing a true renaissance of sorts,” said Damion Barrett, the project’s leader. “Fun City - Mount Vernon” will only accelerate the city’s transformation with the addition of first rate center for sports competitions for kids and adults alike, with major recreational, educational, digital media, and fitness components along with some popular dining amenities.  It will create an estimated 800 new and much needed jobs for the Mount Vernon area, and give many of the local youth their first professional job in a safe environment.”

Helmed by Mr. Tom Conneally, the Cottage International Development Group, Inc. is heading up the development efforts, along with a complement of other seasoned and nationally recognized firms who specialize in recreational, mixed-use development projects. “This project will beautify and enhance the environmental attributes of the site, including the Hutchinson River adjoining the property,” states Mr. Conneally.  “Our design team will focus on eco-conscious, sustainable design that will provide a safe and clean environment for all children and their families.”

Once built, “Fun City - Mount Vernon” will include thrilling water rides and attractions, a modern fitness center, an Olympic sized pool, a soccer field, tennis and basketball courts, two competition level ice rinks, family dining, leading edge education programs, including a studio for children to learn about television, film and digital arts.  Highlighting the development’s commitment to feature local history, a replica of the bell in St. Paul’s Church will be the centerpiece in the Lobby’s water fountain.  A jumbotron will feature newsworthy information as well as places of cultural and historical significance to Mount Vernon.

“At this juncture, we’re planning and discussing with the City of Mount Vernon how this project can best serve the community.  Our goal is to create a safe, clean, attractive and meaningful community hub for all families to enjoy.  The vision is to make the “Fun City - Mount Vernon” a destination location that makes everyone proud.  I plan to bring my own kids here!” said Mr. Barrett.  The project plans to break ground in the summer of 2011 and complete construction in the spring of 2013.

At the end of the presentation, Mayor Young stated: “I don’t want anybody to get excited at this stage, since this is only the very first meeting we are having with the developer. There is a lot we need to learn about this proposed project, especially in the area of community inclusion. We want to know more about the jobs the project will provide for our citizens; we want to know more about the developer’s track record; we want to visit a park they have already built; we want to study their resume. We are ready to talk and wish to maintain a dialogue with the developer at this time.”
