Westchester Library System Invites Teens to Imagine a Greener World Through Reading
WLS Receives $2,500 Grant from Con Edison to Promote Environmental Awareness in Westchester Youth

This Fall, the Westchester Library System (WLS ) begins Imagining a Greener World Through Reading, a program offering Westchester youth a unique opportunity. Through works of fiction, teens will examine the environmental issues that impact their daily lives. A $2,500 grant from Con Edison makes participation in the program free for a culturally diverse audience of teens.

Participants will meet at their local library over the autumn months as part of a reading group. The groups encourage teens to grapple with the relationship between humans and their environment. “Through fiction, teens experience alternative approaches to resolving issues that, like the environment, they face in their own lives,” said John Sexton, WLS Teen Services Consultant & Specialist.

Sexton continued, “Reading groups provide an opportunity to discuss the way a character in a book confronts problems and to consider whether the choices made in fiction are applicable to real life. We are very grateful to Con Edison for this wonderful opportunity to reach teens.”

Over one-third of the 38 WLS member libraries will participate in the new program. The fourteen libraries span Westchester County and include the Ardsley Public Library, Bedford Hills Free Library, Bronxville Public Library, Chappaqua Public Library, Dobbs Ferry Public Library, Field Library (Peekskill), Greenburgh Public Library, Hendrick Hudson Free Library (Montrose), Katonah Village Library, Lewisboro Library, Mount Kisco Public Library, Mount Vernon Public Library, North Castle Public Library, and the White Plains Public Library.

“There are a number of environmentally-themed titles written for teens that are engaging, fun, and thought-provoking,” said Sexton. Participants will read books selected from a list of titles that includes everything from contemporary classics such as T.A. Barron’s The Ancient One and Susan Pfeffer’s Life As We Knew It to recent teen bestsellers like Suzanne Collins’ The Hunger Games.

Con Edison is a long-time supporter of Westchester Library System’s programs and services. The company has been the presenting sponsor of the annual Book & Author Luncheon since its inception in 1990 and received the 2009 Outstanding Collaborative Energy & Support Award for their generosity.
