Millwood, NY
Food Bank for Westchester to Host 4th Annual
Hunger Heroes Awards Breakfast
The Food Bank for
Westchester, which is celebrating its 20th year
of fighting hunger in Westchester, will host the
Fourth Annual Hunger Heroes Awards Breakfast on
June 9, 2009, from 8:30 until 10:00 am, at
Abigail Kirsch at Tappan Hill, Tarrytown.
Sponsored by Entergy, the breakfast honors a
volunteer, service provider, donor, and
corporation who have contributed significantly
toward the alleviation of hunger in Westchester.
Tony Aiello,
reporter for Westchester CBS-TV news, will serve
as emcee, and Catherine Marsh, Executive
Director, Westchester Community Foundation, will
be the guest speaker.
Our Hunger Heroes
breakfast is a wonderful way to thank the
members of our community who work tirelessly on
the front lines to help feed the hungry in
Westchester and to raise awareness about this
critical issue in our community. In these
difficult economic times, that awareness and
support is more critical than ever," said
Christina Rohatynskyj, Executive Director of the
Food Bank. "They are true heroes."
Karen O'Brien of
Community Services Associates (CSA) at the
Sacred Heart Church, Mount Vernon, will receive
the Volunteer Award. Ms. O'Brien, a retired
registered dietitian, helps prepare and serve
meals to over 100 men and women who come to the
church daily for meals. She is receiving the
award because she epitomizes the spirit of
volunteerism. As a professional she is acutely
aware of the connection between good nutrition
and good health and is determined to provide
that opportunity to CSA clients. O'Brien
prepares more than 200 dinners each holiday
season.
The Yonkers
Community Action Program (YCAP) Emergency Food
Pantry is receiving the Service Provider Award
for its 30 years of service reducing poverty and
fighting hunger in Westchester. YCAP has
adapted to the changing needs of its clients
since inception in 1965. When a growing senior
population requested a special "senior only"
food distribution, YCAP set one up. When YCAP
started an intergenerational collaboration with
another agency YCAP added to that mix a monthly
food distribution. Most recently YCAP converted
its Food Pantry to a "CLIENT CHOICE" food pantry
allowing recipients the dignity of selecting the
food they will use, just like in a supermarket..
Local radio
station, 107.1 The PEAK, will be honored with
the Donor Award in recognition of its myriad
fundraising tools that support the Food Bank.
The station's general manager, Jason Finkelberg,
has dedicated himself to fighting hunger in
Westchester through the creation of a CD with
performances by current musicians, which
generated more than $20,000 for the Food Bank.
Additionally, The Peak has donated more than
$210,000 worth of airtime to the organization
and helped to generate more than $80,000 in
in-kind contributions.
The winner of the
Corporate Service Award will be announced at the
breakfast.
The Food Bank for
Westchester, one of eight food banks in New York
State, acquires, warehouses and distributes food
to 200 Westchester County hunger relief
organizations, including food pantries and soup
kitchens, among others. These efforts feed some
or all of the 200,000 people in Westchester who
are hungry or at risk of hunger. The Food Bank
mission is supported by an extensive donor and
volunteer network.
Tickets for the
breakfast are $35 and can be purchased through
the Food Bank at 914-923-1100. Silver, Bronze
and Friend sponsorships are still available for
the Hunger Heroes Awards Breakfast.
The sponsorship
application is available at the Food Bank
website at www.foodbankforwestchester.org.
For additional
information, contact the Food Bank at
914-923-1100. The Food Bank for Westchester is
