Mt. Vernon
Eileen M. Justino picked as
Loretta Hottinger's replacement on City Council;
Daniel DeBendictus new Deputy City Clerk
Eileen M. Justino is white, assertive, intelligent,
likable and very popular throughout the City of Mount
Vernon. And to the surprise of some, she was one of four
candidates recently nominated
by the Mount Vernon
Democratic Committee for City Council seats in the coming
big election.
On Wednesday, May 20, the Mount Vernon City Council
proved that Justino is looked at as a rising star by many
within the Mount Vernon political arena. By a
unanimous vote, the City Council appointed her to the City
Council as Loretta Hottinger's replacement, who left to
become the Corporation Council for the City of Mount Vernon.
Swearing in Justino was another Mount Vernon rising
star, Judge Helen Blackwood, who was recently appointed a
Mount Vernon City Court Judge after having served many years
as the Corporation Council.
Holding the bible during the swearing in ceremony was
Justino's proud husband, Michael, while dozens of her
friends and relatives were part of a near capacity crowd who
attended the special session of the City Council to see her
get appointed.
Each Council member spoke highly of Justino, including
the following guest speakers: Mayor Clinton I. Young,
Legislator Lyndon Williams and Mount Vernon Democratic
Committee Chair, Devereaux
Cannick.
"I am very pleased that the City Council has picked
Eileen Justino to fill Loretta Hottinger's seat on the City
Council. She is an intelligent, caring and likable person,
and I can't think of a better person for the position," said
Mayor Young.
Justino will be filling the balance of Hottinger's four
year term, which ends at the end of December of 2009.
Also on the agenda was a vote to appoint another white, Daniel DeBendictus, as Deputy City Clerk. After a unanimous vote,
DeBendictus was appointed Deputy City Clerk and sworn in by
City Clerk George Brown. Holding the bible during the
swearing in ceremony was DeBendictus' dad, Aldo DeBendictus.
"I like the idea that
the Mount Vernon government is becoming more
diversified. We need more of this racial harmony
within our government," said one black woman who
attended the ceremony.
