Mayor Young
welcomes sister city delegation from China
In
the spirit of extending Mount Vernon’s cultural and
educational outreach to the world, Mayor Clinton I.
Young, Jr. hosted a delegation from China at City Hall
on Wednesday, March 19th and 20th, 2008. The
delegation, lead by Vice Mayor Zhoalin Liu, from the
People’s Municipal Government of Yangquan, China arrived
in Mount Vernon by an official Police motorcade escort
as part of the annual Sister City Agreement.
“As the mayor of a city that is home to people from
close to a hundred different nations, it is very
important to foster strong international,
inter-municipal relationships,” said Mayor Young. “It
gives me great pride to have Vice Mayor Liu and the
entire delegation here to reinforce the great bond
between the cities of Yangquan and Mount Vernon.”
Yangquan is located at the western foot of the Taihang
Mountains, southwest of Beijing, China. Yangquan -- as a
newly developed industrial city -- is the political,
economic and cultural center of the eastern part of
Shanxi Province. Locally, Yangquan plays an important
role in the trades of coal mining, energy, heavy and
chemical industries of Shanxi Province, which has been
defined as the key area for investment by the Chinese
central government. Internationally, Yangquan has
maintained wide economic trading relationships with 48
countries and regions all over the world.
The first Sister City agreement was signed in
1995 by former Mount Vernon Mayor Ronald Blackwood, who
invited the delegation from Yangquan to visit the city.
Mayor Blackwood later visited the City of Yangquan to
further strengthen the cultural, business and
educational relationship between the two cities.
Mayor Young also rolled out the red carpet for the
delegation and presented Vice Mayor Liu with the “Key to
the City.” The delegation also toured the MRI and
Hyperbaric Departments at Mount Vernon Hospital. They
also caught a performance by Grimes School students who
performed Chinese songs and dances. Vice Mayor Liu said
the children’s performance reminded him of his own
childhood in China. The delegation also dined at local
eateries and toured of the city. Both leaders committed
to establish video-conferencing to connect school
children in Mount Vernon and Yangquan. They also
discussed a business exchange symposium to connect
Chinese business owners to Mount Vernon.
“I am pleased to visit Mount Vernon and meet Mayor
Young,” noted Vice Mayor Liu. “This is a wonderful
opportunity to further our economics and cultural
relationship between the two cities. I look forward to
future projects and dialogue.”
The official Sister City Agreement was signed during a
special ceremony in the Mayor’s Conference Room on
Thursday, March 20, 2008.
