Annual All-City Music & Art Festival a smash hit

Mount Vernon City School District's Annual All-City Music & Art Festival was once again a big success. The event, held Tuesday night, April 8 at the Mount Vernon High auditorium, featured talented students from elementary and middle school with their art work in exhibit and their music and dance performances on stage.
The program was not as long as in previous years, since high school students were not included this year. Nevertheless, the event received rave reviews from the many who attended the popular yearly festival.
The Masters of Ceremony for the event included Mary Lando and Vincent Riccitelli, and opening remarks came from Angela Addesso, Administrator for the Arts.
     This year's guest speakers included:

  • Dr. Welton "Tony" Sawyer, Superintendent

  • BOE Trustee, Derrick Clay

  • City of Mount Vernon Mayor, Clinton I. Young, Jr.

The following groups performed splendidly during the course of the evening:

  • Grimes Elementary Dance Troup, under the direction of Karen Zambelli

  • Elementary/Middle School Combined Honors Chorus, under the direction of Charlotte Moore

  • Elementary Honors Strings Orchestra, led by Mary Lando, substituting for Lubima Kalinkova Shentov

  • Elementary Honors Band, led by Jay Hagan

  • Middle School Honors Band, under the direction of Mansa Gory and Kelly Oram

This year's event included a Middle School Honors Band, which has been newly formed after an absence of several years.

Included in this year's printed program was a written work by Dr. Terry Bergeson, State Superintendent of Public Instruction in Washington State. The following is a paragraph extracted from the piece: "The Arts communicate and speak to us in ways that teach literacy and enhance our lives. We must continue to find a place for arts programs and partnerships not only for what it teaches students about art, but for what it teaches us all about the world we live in."
Plans are already in place for next year's festival, which many are hoping will include groups from the high school level.
