Mount Vernon student attending Princeton University Summer Journalism Program

Aliyyah Camp, a junior at Thornton High School, will be attending the Princeton University Summer Journalism Program [PSJP] from July 25th to August 4th. The PSJP is an all-expense paid program for aspiring journalists in the 11th and 12th grade. The program lasts for ten days at the Princeton University campus in Princeton, NJ. This program exposes its participants to first-hand journalism.
Being the only student accepted from Mount Vernon
, Aliyyah Camp will leave inspiring footprints for other high school students interested in journalism. She had no idea she’d make it so far in the application process. "I thought - hey, why not give it a shot," said Camp.
Twenty-one students across the country are chosen for the PSJP every summer, out of a total of about 900 applicants!

Although the acceptance into the PSJP came as a surprise to her, Camp's colleagues, mentors and teachers know she's capable of achieving anything. She has a peak GPA of 3.986 and won the Undergraduate Award in Math for both ninth and tenth grade. Her NYS Regents Exam scores for the past school year are as followed: Math - 96, English - 97, Spanish - 93, Chemistry - 98 and Global History - 96. Camp is also a member of the National Honor Society at Thornton High School.
Acknowledging those who helped her, Camp says, "My Chemistry teacher, Jae Yang, is the one who first told me about the Princeton Summer Journalism Program. Then, my English teacher, Daniel Lanzetta, helped me through the rigorous application process.” When asked what she hopes to get out of the PSJP, Camp said, "I'm looking forward to getting true journalism experience and meeting peers from across the
US that love writing as much as I do." Excited and ecstatic, Camp is counting down the days until she heads to Princeton, NJ.
Camp is also an active member of the
Mount Vernon community. She is part of the Healthy From Birth For Life campaign at the Doles Center; the Youth Empowerment Council with Mayor Clinton Young; the Student Advisory Council with superintendent Dr. W.L. Sawyer and is currently an intern with the Mount Vernon Inquirer.
Camp is clearly on the road to success. She plans to attend Princeton University or another Ivy League university of her choice to major in journalism. Although academically oriented, Camp enjoys sketching, writing poetry, listening to music and shopping with her friends in her spare time.
