Annual holiday party at AC-BAW lifts spirits for many Mount Vernonites

The holidays sometimes represent a time period where people feel alone and depressed, especially during the current global economic climate. But on Saturday, January 3, well over 200 people turned out for the annual holiday party at the AC-BAW Art Center in downtown Mount Vernon that helped reverse negative feelings.
The annual free event is privately sponsored by elected officials, entrepreneurs and others, in an effort to lift the sprits of Mount Vernonites, and as way to thank them for their support.
Many of the sponsors were observed walking into the AC-BAW Center early, which included Mayor Clinton I. Young, Steve Horton, John Boykin, George Brown, Reginald LaFayette, Lyndon Williams, Kenneth Plummer and others.
Although the huge crowd was composed mostly of Mount Vernonites, some of the guests came from as far away as Connecticut, New Jersey and other states to be with friends and relatives from Mount Vernon.
"I may have lost my job and my mother recently, but this incredible party is lifting by spirits right now," said one woman. "My wife and I both lost our jobs together and we are struggling to survive during these tough times, so we needed to be here tonight for our sanity," said a man standing with his wife by the bar.
Many of the guests were shocked to learn that not only was there no fee to get in, but the food and the liquor was totally free as well.
The guests started streaming into the AC-BAW Center promptly at 9:00 PM, and by 11:30 the crowd had grown to a overflowing capacity - spilling to the downstairs area where the exhibits are are situated.
A DJ provided excellent non-stop music the entire evening, and the joyful guests were afforded a temporary respite from the economic turmoil gripping our nation at this time.
