First Latino Expo in Mt. Vernon supported by Brazilian
community
The first ever Latino Expo in Mount Vernon was held on
Sunday, March 29, at the Mount Vernon Armory located on
North Fifth Avenue, and attracted many Latino and Brazilian
residents as well.
The event
was designed to establish a communication bridge between the
Mount Vernon Latino community and the balance of almost 100
different ethnic groups that call Mount Vernon home. The
Expo also focused on educating the Latino community on the
many services available to Mount Vernon citizens.
Included in the one-day event were the following
vendors promoting their services:
-
My Sister’s Place -
Domestic
violence counseling and
family court assistance

a preventive program for families with relative
caregivers.
Surprisingly, many Brazilian community leaders and citizens
teamed up with the Latino organizers of the Expo to make
sure that the event was a success.
Providing musical entertainment was a famous Brazilian
singer by the name of Roberto Trevisan, who is a Mount
Vernon resident. In addition, the participants were treated
to outstanding Brazilian food and refreshments.
The successful event was sponsored by the following:
- Mayor
Clinton Young and the City of Mount Vernon
-
Westchester
County Office for Hispanic Affairs
-
Hudson Health
Plan
-
My Sister’s
Place
-
Westchester
Hispanic Coalition
-
Mount Vernon Neighborhood Health Center
-
Brazilian
Civic Association
There is already much talk and support behind the idea of
making the Latino Expo a yearly event in Mount
Vernon.
