6th Annual Black History Challenge Quiz a resounding success

The Mount Vernon Amory was the site of The Mount Vernon Community That Cares 6th Annual Black History Challenge Quiz, which was held on Tuesday, February 26.

Over 200 attendees and participants were at the event which featured a quiz show format competition with questions related to all aspects of African American history, and the contributions of blacks within the Sciences.

The following teams confronted each other during the fierce but friendly competition:

  • Mount Vernon High School (Strong Program and UN Club)

  • Mount Vernon Youth Bureau (Healthy From Birth For Life)

  • Longfellow Middle School (Lions and Avengers)

  • Mandela/Zollicoffer High School)

  • WestHab PEAK Center

  • Youth Shelter of Westchester

Acting as the moderator once again was the personable, Brother Arthur Muhammad, who kept the audience and the contestants at ease with his continuous humor.

According to the Honorable Mayor Ernest D. Davis, “It is critical that our young people participate in programs that will not only educate them, but also teach them a sense of pride and appreciation for their history. Learning about the accomplishments of black trailblazers, both past and present, will empower youth to realize their potential greatness.”

“The MVCTC Coalition, like in previous years, has done a tremendous job of uniting our youth and adults to create protective factors within the community. The yearly challenge exhibits the strengths of many students and their knowledge of history. Our youth have made passionate requests to replicate this event annually and thanks to the dedication of many volunteers, the city has been able to support this initiative, stated DaMia Harris, Executive Director – Mount Vernon Youth Bureau.

The winning team received an impressive trophy, along with medals and a $50.00 gift certificate. The second place team received medals, along with movie passes.
